Dakota Creek Industries Shipyard Cleanup

Project Overview

The Dakota Creek site is an active shipyard that is used for vessel construction and maintenance. Since around 1879, the Anacortes Port of Dakota Creek site has been used for maritime-related industrial activities like shipping, shipbuilding, repairs, bulk fuel storge, and vessel storage. These activities have resulted in soil, groundwater, and sediment contamination.

The Pacific Pile & Marine project team supported the major redevelopment and expansion of the Dakota Creek Industries Shipyard and involved demolition; dredging; transloading and upland disposal. 36,000 CY of contaminated sediments and 105,000 CY of non-contaminated sediments were dredged. Contract used an alternative procurement method and included design-build elements.

Project Highlights

Related Site Work:

  • Engineering Design Report was approved by Ecology, which detailed the planned cleanup activities and schedule. Soil excavation and removal was completed between June and August 2023. Approximately 1,215 cubic yards of contaminated soil and asphalt/concrete debris was removed and replaced with clean soil.
  • The site finished one year of groundwater monitoring to determine the effectiveness of the excavation and disposal remedy. Any contaminated soil that remains will be capped with pavement to prevent people and wildlife from encountering it. Long-term monitoring of the groundwater will then be put in place to ensure that contamination does not migrate offsite and create a risk of exposure.
