Berth Two Beyond Carbon

Project Overview

Trigon is a long-standing mainstay of the economy in northern British Columbia and its Berth Two Beyond Carbon facility nearly doubles terminal capacity. Berth No.1 was an occupied facility immediately adjacent to Berth 2 with both coal and LPG vessels being loaded throughout construction. While various commodities may be handled across this new berth, it’s the first Canadian export infrastructure designed specifically with hydrogen-as-ammonia handling opportunities in mind.

Project Highlights

  • Piling involved loading and transportation of Owner supplied coated and uncoated lengths of 1,067 mm steel pile from Mission, BC and fabrication of 914 mm steel piles.
  • Installation required drilling rock sockets, clean out and installation of reinforced concrete plugs.
  • Design called for cast-in-place reinforced concrete for top and bottom pile plugs and pile infill, pile cap and deck beams, deck topping, pedestals for pipe racks and platform supports.
  • Pre-cast concrete used for pile cap beams; fender support panels; pre-stressed concrete box beams and deck support; and reinforced concrete box beams for deck support for platform structures, fendering, and electrical work.
  • Construction of a 3,400 m3 artificial reef near Ridley Island was used as habitat offsetting. Reef materials were comprised of rock varying in size from 600 mm (bedding material) to 1400 mm (large boulders) placed using a Hitachi 1200 excavator on floating platform.
  • Bedding material layer was installed per drawing specifications and rows of large boulders were placed afterwards to provide fish habitat.
