Swan Lake Reservoir Expansion

Project Overview

The Swan Lake Hydroelectric facility is located 22 miles northeast of Ketchikan, accessible only by boat or seaplane. The existing facility was a 174-ft tall dam, 86,000 acre-ft reservoir with 2,217-ft long power tunnel and powerhouse with a generating capacity of 22 megawatts.

Pacific Pile and Marine was contracted to perform concrete demolition work on the spillway, procure and place Owner-designed embedded metals and seal plates for the flashboard system (a unique element to this project), erect the flashboard system, place Owner-provided embedded metals for the vertical gate and erect the vertical gate, place reinforced concrete on the wing walls, construct a new reinforced concrete center pier, and modify and seal existing parapet walls.

Project Highlights

  • Modifications to the existing parapet walls on the dam and adjacent to the existing intake
  • Installation of new vertical lift gate including fabricated steel gate guide embeds, 16 x 23-ft fabricated steel gate, hydraulic operating cylinders, and piping; hydraulic power unit
  • Installation of new flashboard gate system including fabricated steel gate embed guides, flashboard panels, post and cable system, friction plate assembly, and trigger system;
  • Installation of electrical power and control/instrumentation system for the new vertical lift gate, including all electrical panels, wire, conduit, and electrical equipment.
