Box Canyon Dam Upstream Fish Passage

Project Overview

The project was a condition to obtain 2005 relicensing for Box Canyon Dam, Pend Oreille County PUD (PUD) as negotiated with FERC regarding the required improvements or changes needed to satisfy numerous stakeholders. Pacific Pile and Marine assisted with the capital improvement project that would provide the greatest benefit to the environment and removing the least beneficial projects.

Project Highlights

  • Installation of a 300-ft long sheet pile cofferdam including dewatering and 60’x135′ pile-supported work trestle and dredge support and disposal of spoils, as required to enable fish ladder construction in the dry in a challenging river environment.
  • The cofferdam was required to resist up to 28 ft of differential water pressure, stream flow pressure, and construction surcharge live load.
  • Implementation plan focused on an upstream trap-and-haul fish passage project to enable the safe and timely passage of Bull Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, and Mountain Whitefish.
