The Don Statter Harbor supports recreational and commercial vessel fleets in Auke Bay. The Master Plan envisioned reconfiguration and expansion of the existing harbor facilities within Auke Bay to alleviate congestion and improve safety.
The upgrade of the moorage facility at the Statter Harbor Marina involved demolition of existing wood float system; repairs and refurbishment of existing concrete floats; post tensioning concrete float sections; and installation of 20,000 sqft of new concrete moorage floats anchored with 24-in dia. 240-ft long galvanized steel pile socketed 20-ft into bedrock. 240-ft pile were installed in full length sections. Up to 100-ft of overburden was removed from inside the pile in places.
This project had a challenging construction schedule with a wide variety of construction activities including installation/relocation of submarine utilities, construction of a small building, concrete outfall structure, and concrete abutment requiring coordination of multiple crews and long-lead material procurement. Marine mammal monitoring ensured construction activities did not disrupt environmental regulations.
PPM worked closely with engineering partners during installation of the concrete moorage floats connected to the existing headwalk float. The two mainwalk floats with 32-ft and 42-ft finger floats were designed to meet projected moorage demands for replacing DeHart’s Marina.
There was minimal disruption in access to the harbor throughout the project to minimally impact the tourist industry critical to the local economy as well as the local access for commercial fishing.
